Belly Dancing Lessons

Do you know of any good online belly dance lessons?

I am a intermediate dancer who had to unfortunately move to go to grad school and I can’t find anybody who teaches locally. Believe me I have tried, the closest instructor is 2 hours away, one way. Has anybody tried Ansuya’s weekly online lessons? She only has one free lesson and one other lesson posted. Does she post classes regularly? Thanks!

I generally don’t recommend on-line lessons but if you are indeed an intermediate at least you have some of the basic posture and moves down. This is both a positive and negative aspect for you if your looking for on-line lessons. It’s positive in that you will be less likely to perform the movements incorrectly or in a way that may end up hurting you. It’s negative because on-line lessons are generally more or less only at the beginner level. My suggestion to you would be to rely more on quality instructional videos geared towards intermediate dancers. I know this can be a big upfront cost in buying the videos though but you may want to buy one or two and then gradually buy more. My second bit of advice is that since you will not be learning with a live teacher you should probably supplement by learning from different types of media. Instead of just using videos or websites or books, use all of them in conjunction with each other. Since you say your an intermediate and have already looked for an instructor you have probably already tried these resources but I will list them just in case you haven’t seen them before.

www.shira.net – under “find a teacher” I think.
www.bhuz.com – has a directory
Even if the nearest classes are 2 hrs away you may be able to find someone to come to your home for private lessons. This is expensive but if you at least found someone who could come once a month it would give you a chance to get feedback on the practice you have been doing for that month and offer a live instruction for newer and more challenging movements and material.

I would also recommend getting some books that describe movements and combinations and try to follow along. Sometimes deciphering the written description of a move you already know can lead to further understanding and internalization of the move. Now I will share some of the on-line lessons I know of. Again these are mostly geared towards beginners so they will probably not challenge you very much. I would recommend writing all the names of the movements you know on a little pieces of paper and putting them in a bowl. then pick out three-five and attempt to use them in a combination or try layering things on top of each other (combinations and layering are generally considered intermediate skills).
These are on-line lessons that are mostly written descriptions:
